Republicans dramatically increase the number of contested elections in 2009. In 84 of 100 districts, Republicans are standing for election (in two more, incumbents who caucus with Republicans are seeking re-election). That's 20 more than in 2007. Aggressive recruiting has paid off with an outstanding crop of candidates. There are 56 districts in which both major parties have candidates, up from 31 in 2007 and 38 in 2005, the last time the Governor's race was also on the ballot.
